Summary:
Wonder is about a boy named August, Auggie, who is entering fifth grade and mainstream school for the first time. He was homeschool up until fifth grade mainly because August has a facial deformity. The story is told from the perspectives of August and a few of his friends and family members.   Wonder demonstrates the challenges students face with physical disabilities and the feelings they have.  It’s message teaches students that a person might have a disability, either visible or not visible, however they are a person just like anyone and share similarities and interests.  It starts with Auggie’s point of view and he shares that he just wants to be treated like an ordinary person.  It opens the readers’ eyes to the issues of acceptance and empathy.  Wonder is a great book to introduce or read to your class.  It is so important to teach acceptance and courage to students, especially when so many students in schools have a variety of disabilities. It teaches hope and love and the importance to treat everyone with respect and love. I would highly recommend this book especially in classrooms where there is a lack of respect or acceptance among the students.
