The Story of Kwanzaa

Washington, D., & Taylor, S. (1996). The story of Kwanzaa. New York: HarperCollins.
Summary: This is an informational book about the African holiday Kwanzaa, and all the components of the holiday. It briefly covers the tradition and the meaning of Kwanzaa and why it is celebrated. There are seven principles of kwanzaa, called the Nguzo Saba, and they remind African Americans of the struggles they faced but also their achievements and goals for the future. At the end of the book there are Kwanzaa activities provided.
I think this is a great book to introduce to students when discussing other holidays, or other cultures. It is important for students to understand different cultures and what they celebrate. Or if their is a student in your class that celebrates Kwanzaa this book would be a great way to share more about that students culture and the holiday they celebrate.
