The BFG

By: Roald Dahl

Dahl, R., & Blake, Q. (1982). The BFG. New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux.

Summary:

The BFG is written by Roald Dahl and is a fairy tale about a giant and a young girl. The giant, the BFG is no ordinary giant, he is a friendly dream catching giant, trying to protect the people from the unfriendly people eating giants. He captures a young orphan girl named Sophie, because she spots him from outside her window.  He takes her to his cave and explains himself as a nice and helpful giant and to not be afraid.  Sophie and the BFG go out on adventures to capture dreams and put them in his dream jars, and give the nice dreams to children at night.  They two also go on a mission to stop the mean giants we learn about from taking and eating children. Sophie and the BFG need to make a nightmare of the mean giants for the Queen so that she can see what they are like and can do something about it.  Sophie and the BFG travel to London, and meet with the Queen.  The Queen calls upon the armed forces to capture the nine giants alongside the BFG and Sophie.
Review: I love this book!  I think it is great as a read aloud for the younger grades or if they are able to do book groups.  It is a very entertaining and magical book.  It covers the topic of dreaming and the importance of dreaming.  The characters are also lovable and the reader easily becomes invested in the characters.
