Esperanza Rising

By: Pam Munoz Ryan

Ryan, P. (2000). Esperanza rising. New York: Scholastic Press.

About:  The story takes place in Mexico and California during the time of the great depression. Esperanza had everything she wanted, until her father was killed and everything changed. Esperanza and her sister Ramona move to America, and they live in a poor mexican labor camp in California.  Esperanza and Ramona experience what it is like to be poor and see many around them leading challenging lives.

The writing is criticized to be very poetic and readers agree they are engaged and the characters are appealing
Multicultural: This story is a great way to teach multicultual concepts to students.  It covers literature, social studies, and spanish.
There are also books written in spanish and books on tape for ELL students.

Below is a book talk of Esperanza Rising in Spanish
