Madeline was first published in 1939 and became a series.  Ludwig Bemelman (1898-1962) was a writer and illustrator from Austria. Six of the Madeline books were published from 1939-1961 and the seventh book was published in 1999.

The Madeline series follows twelve little girls living in a house under the care of Madame Clavel in Paris, France.  The series focus is specifically on one young mischievous and adventurous girl named Madeline.
