By: Jon Klassen
Klassen, J. (2012). This is not my hat. Somerville, Mass.: Candlewick Press.
This Is Not My Hat received the Caldecott Medal Honor in 2013 and won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2014.
The Kate Greenaway Medal is a British award that recognizes illustration in a children's book.
The story is about a small fish who steals a hat off a large fish while he is sleeping. The small fish narrates as he swims through the ocean and the reader sees the images of the big fish waking up and going out to find his hat.
It is exciting for the reader because they get an insight the narrator does not have, which is that the big fish is coming for him to get his hat back
The illustrations are very important in this story because they tell part of the story. They tell the side of the big fish to the audience. The illustrations are prominant yet simple. The artist used a water color base.
